Although
I am mainly a fly angler, I do spinfish quite often in the
kayak as a way of scouting fish and, well, just having a relaxing
afternoon. This video was shot on just such a relaxing afternoon
in late summer of 2006 in the Pine Island Sound backcountry.
A common
question I get about this clip is, "What kind of crazy
lure is that?" Well, it comes from my bass fishing days
and was made right in one of my all time favortie places,
Athens, GA. Still don't know what it is? I'll give you this
one - the Zoom Horny Toad. Yes, that's right. Frog lures do
catch tarpon. Not to mention snook, redfish, seatrout, sharks,
cobia, etc, etc.
I also
get a lot of comments about my bad job with the Boga Grip.
Admittedly, I am not the most graceful with the fish landing
device, but most of my bad "boga-ing" here is on
purpose. Baby tarpon have a tremendous amount of force when
they shake their heads and if they do this with their jaws
locked down in a Boga Grip, their neck muscles can be easily
damaged. These are the musces that operate their gills, and
undue strain can sometimes result in a fatal injury. The fish
may swim away, but can die later. With my drag locked down
to keep the fish in frame (and out of the bushes) I got him
to the boat pretty green. After I latch on to him with the
Boga, if he goes for a head shake, I simply release him from
keeping him from doing harm to himself. You just hope he doesn't
hit the camera!
I have
also had a lot of people ask me where I got the awesome music.
The song is "Only Road" by Art Linton.
You can get it on his "Enemy Lines" CD. A
big thank you to Art for letting my use this song in my video!
